New Updates on the Quiet Zone...

The Quiet Zone is continuing to make headway. Here are some new updates on the project:

1.) The FRA (Federal Railway) has requested additional planning documents, which require an additional 2 weeks for review.

2.) PBOT has been in discussions with ODOT Rail regarding the potential use of unspent funds from another railroad project within this corridor to extend the River District Quiet Zone. Funding is currently in place for the basic Quiet Zone from NW 9th to 17th Avenues. This proposed plan would extend the basic Quiet Zone (1) to the south to the Greenway Trail crossing at the base of the Steel Bridge and (2) to the north to the NW 21st Avenue and NW Nicolai Street intersections.

3.) If the above is implemented as proposed, the River District Quiet Zone would be changed as follows: Phase 1: NW 9th, 15th, and 17th Avenues - 0.6 miles, Phase 2: Greenway Trail and Naito Pkwy - 0.6 miles, Phase 3: NW 21st Ave and NW Nicolai St - 0.4 miles.

The primary focus of this effort is to establish the Phase 1 Quiet Zone as soon as possible, with the implementation of the possible extension (Phase 2 and 3) to follow. This approach will extend the original 0.6 mile Quiet Zone into a 1.4 mile Quiet Zone. The impact will be more significant and will result in train operators NOT sounding their horns between the Steel Bridge and the northwest industrial sanctuary, except in unusual situations.
